Description: Until spring 2015, the High School Proficiency Exams (HSPE) were the state’s exams for reading and writing. These 10th-grade tests were used for graduation assessment requirements and federal accountability. Washington now administers the Smarter Balanced test in English language arts (ELA) instead of the HSPEs. However, students through the Class of 2016 may continue to access HSPE retests in spring 2016 if they have not yet passed one or both tests. (Accessed 5/23/16)

Years of Usage: Spring 2015 to Present
Description: The Smarter Balanced Assessment System utilizes computer-adaptive tests and performance tasks that allow students to show what they know and are able to do. This system is based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts (ELA) and mathematics. Optional interim assessments are also available from the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC).
