Description: CAASPP encompasses a group of assessments, including Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments (for ELA and Math, grades 3-11), Alternative assessments (for ELA and Math, grades 3-11), Science assessments (CST, CMA, and CAPA, grades 3-8, and grade 11), and STS (Standards-Based Tests in Spanish, grades 2-11). The CAASPP System replaced the Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program, which became inoperative on July 1, 2013.

CAHSEE
Full name: California High School Exit Examination
Status: Discontinued.

Description: Beginning with the Class of 2006, students in California public schools were required to pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) to demonstrate competency in grade-level skills in reading, writing, and mathematics to earn a high school diploma. The assessment was based on content standards developed by the State Board of Education (SBE). Effective January 1, 2016, the State of CA dropped the requirement that students pass the CAHSEE to graduate High School, and discontinued use of the assessment altogether.

CAPA

CELDT
Full name: California English Language Development Test

Description: Students in kindergarten through grade twelve whose home language is not English are required by law to be assessed in English language proficiency (ELP). In California, the ELP assessment is the CELDT. The CELDT allows schools to identify students who need to improve their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. Schools also give the test each year to students who are still learning English.

CMA

Description: In April 2007, the California Department of Education, in response to the federal regulations, developed and implemented the California Modified Assessment (CMA) as an alternate assessment of the California content standards based on modified achievement standards for children with disabilities who have an individualized education program (IEP). CMA for Science will continue (as part of the implementation of AB 484) to be administered to students with disabilities in grades five, eight, and ten who have an IEP that identifies the use of the CMA for Science until a successor science test is developed.

CST

ELPAC
Full name: English Language Proficiency Assessments for California

Description: The ELPAC will be the successor to the California English Language Development Test (CELDT). The CELDT is the current required state test for English language proficiency that must be given to students whose primary language is other than English. It will be comprised of two separate ELP assessments: one for the initial identification of students as English learners (ELs), and a second for the annual summative assessment to measure a student’s progress in learning English and to identify the student's level of ELP.

Description: The Smarter Balanced Assessment System utilizes computer-adaptive tests and performance tasks that allow students to show what they know and are able to do. This system is based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. It is administered as Interim Assessments (designed to inform teaching) and Summative Assessments, which are administered as part of the CAASPP system.

STAR

Description: Each spring, CA students in grades two through eleven took a STAR test. The STAR Program looks at how well schools and students are performing. Students take tests in math, reading, writing, science, and history. Teachers and parents can use test results to improve student learning. The STAR Program included four tests: the California Standards Tests, the California Modified Assessment, the California Alternate Performance Assessment, and the Standards-based Tests in Spanish.
